Selling

  • Graded comics
  • Review Buyers in Craigslist
  • Look for local Facebook groups or groups with some locals and guage interest
  • Graded books appear to bring between 1/5 to 1/3 more than non-graded
  • Or Try selling one short box at a time locally (Facebook, Craigslist)
  • Try selling individual slabbed books locally
  • Hank Stockman wanted to run price of comics by him
  • mycomicshop.com rules here (currently not taking comics under $100) - https://www.mycomicshop.com/webuycomics
    • Consider trial shipment of 100 books (Option 5) or having local buyer out for entire collection (after they are buying low-value books again)
  • Shipping - https://www.mycomicshop.com/webuycomics/howtoshipcomicbooks
  • "A reputable dealer will pay from 50 to 80 percent of the retail value of your comics." (But best I found for local shops was 15%-25%, and generally interested only in keys)
  • Mike T notes - I’ll give you my two cents worth (keeping with the theme) on my experience selling comics on eBay: One. They take ten percent off the top. Plus PayPal gets a cut as well. Keep that in mind if you find local buyers. Two. I’ve always done way better starting the bidding at $9.95 with no reserve than putting basically a high retail price on a comic. (for example I tried to look up how much you could get for your Spider-Man #129 CGC 8.5 and it looks like its between $1500-2300, but it’s hard to tell because these are all “for sale” prices and haven’t sold). You’ll do alright though. Three. eBay has made it pretty painless to pay for and print shipping labels. You even get a little discount. We have a container store here where I buy the right sized boxes and some bubble wrap, so don’t be afraid to ship if you can’t get the right price locally.

Storing and Grading

  • Buy Current sized bags (6 7/8 x 10 1/2) for bronze age books I purchased new (1970+)
  • Buy Silver/Regular sized bags (7 1/8 x 10 1/2) for silver age from before my time (1956-1970)
  • If you are using poly bags they should have a Standard size which is a 1/4" larger than modern, but slightly smaller than Silver. This should fit all your BA books as well as Modern books.
  • If you are using Mylite2's ot Mylite's there is also a Standard size for the same purpose as above.
  • If you are using Mylars you might have to use Silver Age mylar to fit the BA books. Mylar tend to pinch the sides. So having the books fit without being too tight is crucial.
  • I also recommend Mylite2s and fullbacks. You can get them from eGerber.com
  • CGC – Certified Guarantee Company - CGC is a very well-known and reputable company. They are one of the best in the field according to many collectors. CGC uses a membership service in order to submit books with different tiers. They also have partnered with CCS (Classic Collectible Services)  to provide cleaning and pressing services. In order to submit books, you must have a paid membership that ranges from $25 for Associate to $299 for Elite. Personally if you use CGC, OPT FOR THE PREMIUM! The premium is $149 but then CGC will credit your account for $150, which makes it all free! Also when compared to other grading companies, CGC slabs normally have a better ROI (Return on Investment) than others.
  • They take online or Comic-Con (In-person) submissions
  • If you are a collector who likes to invest in comics occasionally, be sure to use GoCollect.com as their slab market rates are right on target.
  • Don’t use reusable sticky bags, some professionals in the industry have found they are acidic and the sticky portion can eat through plastic.
