I would love to see these features added, ranked by importance to me (i.e. #1 is most important):
1) Please, please, please add an option to turn OFF alternative route suggestions.
2) Identify non-paved roads
3) Add an option to display street names in larger text
4) More/better identification of natural sites, esp. lakes and rivers
5) Provide indications of more scenic drives
Some details on items above:
1) For users like me, this is positively dangerous. By "users like me" I mean people who A) like to take scenic routes; and B) like to mute maps audio. I hope you can see how the current functionality of Google maps is really frustrating for such users. I.e. as you are driving along, again and again Maps suggests other routes, and worse, if there's no response it CHANGES FROM THE ROUTE YOU SELECTED. Thus if you are looking at the road and not constantly at the app, it keeps switching off the route you chose without your noticing it.
2) I do a lot of road tripping in unfamiliar areas with Google maps and several times have got into sticky situations because Maps did not inform me that the roads were dirt to barely existing. I know that's a lot of data collection, but it sure would be useful.
3) For people with imperfect eyesight it is really frustrating to keep zooming in to try and catch the name of a road on the map, only to have it snap back to a tinier font.
4) Not as critical, but I'd really like to know the names of rivers and lakes along the routes and it's often hard or impossible to get them from Maps.
5) Even more of a stretch perhaps, but I've often thought of color encoding routes on My Maps to remember how scenic certain routes are. It would be great if Maps provided some assistance here.
