Virginia City Trip

Virgina City, NV     

  • To avoid sheer cliffs, take route to Carson City then Highway 50 east to Highway 341, just before Silver City the road splits with a truck route to the right. The truck route has a few curves but is an easy climb. The route through Silver City and Gold Hill is straighter and more scenic, but steep at the end (i.e. not suitable for RV's or trucks).
  • At an elevation of 6,220 feet, Virginia City’s temperatures indicate a town capable of offering visitors mild summer days and glimpses of a Sierra Nevada-area winter. Mean temperatures fall to 33 degrees Fahrenheit in January and rise to a pleasant 70

  • NV - Virginia City - Delta Saloon -  10-4 Mon-Fri, 9-4 Sat-Sun - The Delta Saloon was put up in 1875 and is located along historic C Street, where the old businesses from the mining boomtown are. The saloon has the infamous Suicide Table, so named because three previous owners of the saloon have committed suicide after they lost their money and properties to winning players. The place is an interesting casino and bar with many preserved historical items
  • NV - VIrginia City - Brass Rail - The Brass Rail Saloon, also known as Danielle's Brass Rail, is one of the few old saloons left over from the silver strike days when Virginia City was a booming town. It is located in the Old Washoe Club building along a very historic street, just minutes away from your Virginia City Inn. The saloon has gaming and slot machines. It also displays Nevada's oldest roulette wheel and an antique gold and ruby glass collection.

Misc. 

  • Boston Saloon marker - kiosk connected to Bucket of Blood Saloon - Between 1866 and 1875, a remarkable business thrived directly behind building. Free-born William C. Brown operated his Boston Saloon, serving Virginia City’s African Americans. Archaeologists have revealed that Brown offered his customers finely prepared meals with the best cuts of meat. Shortly after Brown sold his business, The Great Fire of 1875 swept through town destroying the building. There were rarely more than one hundred African Americans living in Virginia City, but they played varied and important roles in the community. Some African Americans pursued work as laborers, porters, and barbers. Others became affluent business owners, and a prominent doctor won widespread respect. By the 1870s, African American children attended integrated schools. Prejudicial laws and racism placed hurtful restrictions on the African Americans of Nevada. Fortunately, a prevalent pro-Union, anti-slavery attitude improved the lives of many African Americans who helped build Virginia City.  (hmdb.org)
