Areas
Check out Maine (including future of coastal regions) Oregon coast? California? New Orleans? East coast or east midwest?
Wish List
Non-negotiable:
- Access to reliable, high speed internet
- Not a lot of fixer-upper work and no heavy maintenance (okay to hire someone to care for lawn or pool, but not an unusual amount of this)
- Minimum bedroom/office space for 2 bedrooms and 2 offices (and 2 bathrooms).
- Modernized kitchen and at least one modernized bathroom
- Ample storage space for kitchen and main bedroom (preferably a walk-in closet)
- Some kind of unique or rare character in the setting and/or house itself
- Some extraordinary feature(s), that would make friends eager to visit: This is the hardest to nail down. It could be the house itself, it could be the setting, or both. We love historical mansions or old tudors or victorians with great dark woodwork and/or stonework; or an old church; but we'd also love a highly stylized MCM place. Love touches like a turret, crenelated battlements, decks on upper levels, But it can't feel plain or strictly contemporary.
Optional, but we'd like a place that has strong appeal in a few of these areas:
- Prefer a modernized older place to most newer places (not found of most "McMansions")
- Near and with a view of a significant body or flow of water (Safe from rising sea levels, receding lake levels). Lake Erie, a river, a creek, etc.
- Nice back patio, good for entertaining, and with a nice view
- Stone walls and/or foundations
- Lots of dark wood and woodwork
- Not overly difficult or expensive to keep warm in winter and cool in summer
- Big and/or wrap-around porches are nice
- At least one area with high ceilings
- Like lots of big windows and especially like an area with 2-story window(s) (the more "lodge" like, the better)
- Not a high risk of destruction by fire with climate change (don't think we have to worry about this around Cleveland)
- Within on nearby a moderately sized town, with availability of good groceries, bars, restaurants
- Easy for people to fly into, especially from Western cities (again, fine with near Cleveland)
- Fireplace(s)
- Not too much yard work, but nice patio, deck, garden areas (but would pay for lawncare/gardeners for a large estate if it's a beautiful setting)
- Like lots of trees, and driveways that wind through them before getting to the house
- Moderate weather that will not be too adversely affected by climate change (okay with Cleveland)
- Reasonable drive to medical services, e.g. sleep doctor, hospital, regular doctors, etc.
- Prefer being in or closer (20 min?) to a big city
- Very open between first floor rooms
- Swimming pool, esp. one with irregular shape
- A wet bar -- inside or out -- would be nice.
- It would be great to have some kind of mother-in-law or a separate part of the house with their own kitchen and bath (potential living area for parents)
- Would prefer to one or more bedrooms on the first floor (minimal stairs, for when parents visit and when we get older)
- Neighborhood where people like and interact with each other

Mover Notes
- Hutch - We used ABF U-pack for two moves and were very happy with them. They are the same idea as pods but a bit more solid. Delivery guys that did drop off and pick up were fantastic. At our first Boise house he was patient with me as I put down 2x4s on our sloped (and VERY short) driveway so that it could be level.
- We used a storage unit at 2851 S Federal Way, Boise, ID 83705 that has changed names but was/is very new. We had to store stuff while we were selling our old place and building/finishing the new one.
- Pods.com - Uhaul/Uboxes
- Pods.com competitors listed here, here and here
- Pods.com about 5% higher, higher quality containers
- Expect to pay $5,500 – $7,600 for move
- Packing Notes
- PODZILLA will need a total clearance area of 12 ft. wide, 15 ft. high, and 40 ft. long
- To put a PODS container on the street you may need permits from your city or town. Call Customer Care at (855) 706-4758
- If you’re thinking about having your unit placed on an unleveled or non-paved surface, please discuss this with your Customer Care Associate.
- Ask about long term storage rates
- Make sure weight is distributed
- Have items you will want first near the door
- Do NOT pack critical documents in Pods
- You don’t need to be there for your delivery or pick-up.
