Travelers generally only stopped only for quick meals or to spend the night before leaving early the next morning. But eventually as railroads became more widely used in the 1860s and 1870s, the house became less and less popular. Shortly after the turn of the century the house was ultimately abandoned and fell into ruin. After laying in ruins for several decades, the house was given another chance in the 1960s by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. According to a newspaper article from 1963, the Conservancy wanted to develop the house as a “living museum” that could be a focal point of the northern side of Moraine State Park.

Destinations

Shorter Road Trips

  • Treehouse Point - Fall City (30min)
  • Port Orchard Hobbit House
  • Bagley Creek Loop - 2:45h drive, 1.4m hike (Bagley Lakes Trail slightly longer)
  • White River Falls Hike -  4.5h drive, 1.5m hike
  • Sisters and Prairie City OR - 5.5h,
  • Christine Falls and Comet Falls - 2:15 drive, elevation gain 2000', very short walk to Christine, 4m+ round trip for Christine and Comet
    • Moderate to difficult hike with steep and rocky portions leading to gorgeous waterfall views. There are parts that are a bit of a grind. Poles are a good thing for getting back down if you have bad knees.
    • From the Nisqually entrance of the park, drive 10.7 miles, just past the Comet Falls trailhead to a small parking area. A short set of stairs leads to the falls overlook.
    • It’s approximately a 2-mile walk from Christine Falls to Comet Falls, typically will take about an hour one-way, 4-miles or approx. 2 hours round trip.
    • Parking will probably be difficult on weekend
    • There was a short paved trail leading to the lower viewpoint where we were able to see the main tier of the Christine Falls plunging beneath the Nisqually-Paradise Road ... We were also able to walk onto that bridge from back on the road where we looked upstream to get even closer frontal views of the upper tiers of Christine Falls.
  • Brownsville - cool little town, check out Kirks Ferry (closed Mon/Tues, 4pm weekdays, noon weekends) - 4.5h drive
  • John Day, John Day Fossil Beds, Clarno Palisades - 6h
  • Ross Lake Resort (floating cabins) - 2.5h from home -
  • Lake Twenty-Two - 7 mile loop moderate hike, rocky .5m - Well trafficked
    • It took us 1.5 hours up and 1 hour down. The loop around the lake is definitely worth the extra half an hour. If the trail head parking lot is full, the picnic area parking should be available across from the main parking lot.  Most of the way up is stairs until the last mile up. Then you’re hiking through some pretty sharp rock. There are trees in the way at about 1.5 and 2 miles into the hike that you’ll have to maneuver around (I thought I had gotten lost). Definitely wear water proof hiking boots. You pass through some small creeks and then the rock can be pretty rough on your feet.
  • Hug Point State Park, OR - 4 hr drive, .5m hike on beach to waterfall and caves
    • check tides - danger of being stranded at high tide; waterfall just a trickle in summer
  • Hermiston, OR - 4 hours, stay the night and visit bars in old Chinese restaurants, the bowling alley, and see that the Pheasant is like on a weekend night.

DONE  (do again?)

  • Hocking Hills, OH - 3.5h
    • Upper Falls to Lower Falls via Buckeye Trail  - Head out on this 1.0-mile loop trail near South Bloomingville, Ohio. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 28 min to complete. This is a very popular area for hiking, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring. The best times to visit this trail are March through November. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash. This trail passes Upper Falls, Devil's Bathtub, Lower Falls, and Old Man's Cave, which are known to be some of Ohio's most stunning locations. The views at the waterfalls are picturesque, and most of the trail is under lush forest. The terrain on the route is well-equipped with stairs, railings, and bridges. Some sections are rocky and can be slippery. Swimming is prohibited in the waterfalls and creeks.

    • Continue east on Truck Rd and turn right on Mosquito Lake Rd to Mosquite Lake Road Bridge over Nooksack, dirt parking area on right;
  • Thor's Well, OR - 6h (7h down the coast)
