Washington and Western Road Trips

Destinations

Shorter Road Trips

  • Treehouse Point - Fall City (30min)
  • Port Orchard Hobbit House
  • Bagley Creek Loop - 2:45h drive, 1.4m hike (Bagley Lakes Trail slightly longer)
  • White River Falls Hike -  4.5h drive, 1.5m hike
  • Sisters and Prairie City OR - 5.5h,
  • Christine Falls and Comet Falls - 2:15 drive, elevation gain 2000', very short walk to Christine, 4m+ round trip for Christine and Comet
    • Moderate to difficult hike with steep and rocky portions leading to gorgeous waterfall views. There are parts that are a bit of a grind. Poles are a good thing for getting back down if you have bad knees.
    • From the Nisqually entrance of the park, drive 10.7 miles, just past the Comet Falls trailhead to a small parking area. A short set of stairs leads to the falls overlook.
    • It’s approximately a 2-mile walk from Christine Falls to Comet Falls, typically will take about an hour one-way, 4-miles or approx. 2 hours round trip.
    • Parking will probably be difficult on weekend
    • There was a short paved trail leading to the lower viewpoint where we were able to see the main tier of the Christine Falls plunging beneath the Nisqually-Paradise Road ... We were also able to walk onto that bridge from back on the road where we looked upstream to get even closer frontal views of the upper tiers of Christine Falls.
  • Brownsville - cool little town, check out Kirks Ferry (closed Mon/Tues, 4pm weekdays, noon weekends) - 4.5h drive
  • John Day, John Day Fossil Beds, Clarno Palisades - 6h
  • Ross Lake Resort (floating cabins) - 2.5h from home -
  • Lake Twenty-Two - 7 mile loop moderate hike, rocky .5m - Well trafficked
    • It took us 1.5 hours up and 1 hour down. The loop around the lake is definitely worth the extra half an hour. If the trail head parking lot is full, the picnic area parking should be available across from the main parking lot.  Most of the way up is stairs until the last mile up. Then you’re hiking through some pretty sharp rock. There are trees in the way at about 1.5 and 2 miles into the hike that you’ll have to maneuver around (I thought I had gotten lost). Definitely wear water proof hiking boots. You pass through some small creeks and then the rock can be pretty rough on your feet.
  • Hug Point State Park, OR - 4 hr drive, .5m hike on beach to waterfall and caves
    • check tides - danger of being stranded at high tide; waterfall just a trickle in summer
  • Hermiston, OR - 4 hours, stay the night and visit bars in old Chinese restaurants, the bowling alley, and see that the Pheasant is like on a weekend night.
  • Sedro-Woolley Tree House

  • Cape Flattery (nearby motels sold out in near summer dates)
  • Cougar Hot Springs - 5.5-7 hours
  • Umpqua Hot Springs - 7 hours
  • Tacoma
  • Roy area - 1.5 h

  • Marymere Falls day trip and hike
  • Wreck of Peter Iredale - 3.5 hours

  • The Eagle Tree - 6414 Bayview Edison Rd, Bow, WA 98232
  • Eagle watching, Deming - Dec/Jan - best time 11am (link) (map)
    • Nicer Route (2.5 hr): Lake City Way 522 to Hwy 9 / N Woodinville Snohomish Rd; Hwy 9 to Deming; Right on 542 Mt Baker Hwy;
    • Right onto Truck Road near Mount Baker Highway milepost No.15; Deming Homestead Eagle Park about 1/2 mile on right;
    • Continue east on Truck Rd and turn right on Mosquito Lake Rd to Mosquite Lake Road Bridge over Nooksack, dirt parking area on right;
  • Thor's Well, OR - 6h (7h down the coast)
    • To get to Thor's Well, park at the Cook's Chasm pull-out .3 miles south of the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center. You can see the hole from the viewpoints, or walk down the steps for a better look. You can also get to the spot via a trail connecting several points in the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area
  • Port Townsend - 2:15 - Stay at the Manresa Castle and ask for a haunted room (302, 306?), ask to see journal, turret; check out the bar at the Shanghai and Snug Harbor just out of town
  • Old Town Eureka, CA - spend and evening later in the week when bars are open
  • Walnut Grove, CA and drive up to Rio Vista along Sacramento River (Hwy 160)
